Since it is our latest fighters should have HAS.

      HAS - Hardened Aircraft Shelters.

Haiz, FDS always the take-for-granted squadron what. Got FDS outpost at CAB East. But FDS HQ remains at CAB West. About 30 FDS personnel are stationed at CAB East at any time.

Got a few HAS, but most of the planes are parked in weather sheds located parallel to the runway/taxiway.

The pic only show a small section of the base. 200 hectares can't possibly be captured in one pic. For security reasons, probably can't show too much oso.

    • Hmm, they have lights that dim themselves automatically. I wonder if this is a security hazard.

New home for the formidable F-16s
      By Alexis Hooi

THE air force unit operating Singapore's deadliest fighter planes has a new home next to Changi Airport - an installation that is also the first such facility to be fully developed locally.

Complementing the existing Changi Air Base West, the installation will eventually house 20 of the Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) most formidable jets - the F-16D Blk 52+ Fighting Falcon.

These aircraft have enhanced capabilities like long-range fuel tanks and improved ground-mapping capabilities.

The F-16s of 145 Squadron will fly out of the new Changi Air Base East, which took two years to complete and was jointly developed by the Defence Ministry, the RSAF and the Defence Science and Technology Agency.

Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean called the air base the first that 'we ourselves entirely designed and developed', when speaking at its opening yesterday.

'This indigenous development allowed the RSAF to define the design to fully meet its requirements well into the third generation of the RSAF's development,' he said.

The RSAF now has fighter planes at the Tengah and Paya Lebar air bases. A fourth air base, in Sembawang, is used mainly for helicopter operations.

The 200ha Changi Air Base East boasts a 3km runway, a control tower, a logistics complex and other state-of-the-art facilities manned by about 400 RSAF personnel.

Siting the air base at Changi has made it easier for the air force's planes to head east to the South China Sea for training, given Singapore's limited air space.

The commander of Changi Air Base, Colonel Andy Tan, 44, added that the new air base will need to coordinate the flights of the RSAF's planes with the civilian aircraft flying in and out of Changi Airport.

Having civilian and military aircraft landing at the same time, on their separate runways, was 'one of the key challenges facing us because of our close proximity to Changi Airport'.[/i]

    • Singapore opens new Changi Air Base East to house F-16Ds
      By Dominique Loh, Channel NewsAsia

      image

SINGAPORE : Changi Air Base is spreading its wings.

A new 200-hectare military complex and runway has been custom-built from scratch on reclaimed land, packed with cutting-edge technology.

Changi Air Base East was inaugurated on Monday by Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean.

The 145 Squardron which will be based there, will fly the latest and most advanced fighter, the F-16D Block 52 Plus two-seater jets.

The F-16Ds are state-of-the-art, and so is the airbase they operate from.

Inside the control tower are systems that monitor and control every aspect of the airbase.

All its lights are controlled by computer touch screens - even the street lamps.

The lights are automatically dimmed during off-peak hours, saving about 25 percent on the electricity bill.

An anti-condensation system blows heated and dehumidified air onto the tower's glass panels, giving air traffic controllers unobstructed views.

And at both ends of the 3-kilometre runway, hook cables and barrier nets can be deployed at a push of a button to trap any fighter jet in an emergency.

It has all been jointly developed by the defence ministry, air force and Defence Science and Technology Agency.

Ong Yew Hing, Defence Construction Division at the Defence Science and Technology Agency, said: "This allowed us to evaluate and select the most cost effective and best meet the operation needs of the airbase. Compared to existing airbases, because they were inherited from the British we were not able to implement some of these systems because of the cost considerations."

Its location gives it an advantage over other airbases like Tengah or Paya Lebar.

Colonel Andy Tan, Changi Air Base Commander, said: "Aircraft from those bases have specific routes to fly to get out of the airfield. They have to meet altitude restrictions because of the congested airspace over the island."

The F-16 jets from Changi can make a faster trip out to training areas over the South China Sea, compared to their counterparts from other airbases.

The 145 Squadron can save as much as five to seven minutes in travel time, which means they also save on fuel and cut down on costs. - CNA

    • I won't be surprised if the F-16 BLK 52+ is almost similar to F-16 I Soufa..

Anyway, judging by the comformal tanks...should be able to give more fuel to go further and ability to loiter at a certain area..

      + KC-135...

      Anywhere within ASEAN....is strike-able..

      !!

i know the speed of the F-16's during peacetime now..

From tengah to changi is 40km..

so 5 minutes of saved travelling time is ...

      40 x 12 = 480km/hour normal travelling speed for our F-16...

Selarang so far away, not so jialat lah

Should pity those in Changi Air Base mah... those that have to stay-in, like the technicians on stand-by and FDS personnel Sad

FDS guardhouse at Changi East is at the end of the runway, right in the flight path of planes taking off/landing. Lucky the building is bomb shelter, walls super thick, can insulate some of the sound.

    • Aiya, my beloved 145 had switch to F16s already......sob sob.. Anyway, when I return to sg in the future, most probably will end up at 142 for reservist. Or maybe at civil defense as a fireman, haha. Reservist, everyday play water other than GS.

I had never asked this before, but is there any of you guys from Tengah airbase and also from 145 squadron from Dec 1996 to Dec 1998?

Looking at our Vipers, they do bear a close resemblance to the IDAF's F-16I SUFA.Furthermore, the dorsal spine is rumoured to be from Elbit Systems too.

      image

If you're talking about combat radius of a F-16D Blk 52+, it should be in the region of these figures.(From LMTAS)

Performance: Maximum short-endurance speed: Mach 2.05 (1353 mph) at 40,000 feet. Maximum sustained speed Mach 1.89 (1247 mph) at 40,000 feet. Tactical radius (hi-lo-hi interdiction on internal fuel with six 500-lb bombs) 360 miles. Maximum ferry range 2450 miles with maximum external fuel (excluding 600gal. tanks or CFT's) .

Quoting Tsahi Ben-Ami and Zvi Kreisler. both of the IDAF, "Lockheed, which lost the last Israeli aircraft tender to Boeing in 1994, said its single-engine F-16 aircraft could now fly as far as the twin-engine F-15I offered by Boeing. Lockheed has developed attachable fuel tanks that increased the range of the F-16s radius of operations to 1,500 km (800 miles). Israeli pilots tested the F-16 in the United States in 1999 fitted with the new fuel tanks."

I would say that with the CFTs installed on our Vipers, we could sustain combat operations with aerial refuelling support by our KC-135s up to the Indian Ocean or beyond the Spratlys.Sounds suitable for night maritime interdiction and air defence umbrella. The Viper is capable of fast altitude penetration with full external load while not compromising on its stabilty.SEAD and anti-ship strike missions anyone? If the Blk52+ Vipers are configured for SEAD and bombardment missions, we could have a interceptor oriented, multi role for the NGF role, meaning the Rafale would be ruled out, leaving the Typhoon and the F-15 Eagle.

    • Yup Tengah air base is a place with super strict security...

      Can't just go anywhere...

got many different levels of security clearance...

Anyway, with regards to F-16 I....If our Vipers are quite similar and in terms of shape...Anyway..Even if we did get the technology..it would be in-appropriate for MINDEF to disclose the source..

Because of the heavy sensitivity of the israeli stuff..and we're mostly do those dealings with them...and considering that Almost all muslim countries in the world except Turkey..bears certain animousity towards them...

It is another clear distinction, why it was never closely associated to the SUFA..

Both Being a small area located in a muslim dominated place...we certainly share such "sensitivities and similarities"

Furthermore, the new picture was released recently..um...wonder if i can a close up look at it..and see if the cockpit inside really bears any resemblance

      My 2 cents

Anyway, Malaysia and Indonesia have always expressed concerns about us dealing with those "so called state-sponsored terrorism" of Zionism..

During 1998, some "policiticians" even told us to restrict contacts ,and another time, during a period, a group of journalists came into singapore to investigate a "tudung issue"

Talk about interfering with domestical affairs. and yes, probably someone is lagging SINCE 1965..

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Isn't it ironic that the Matrix kept on refering to "Zion" ??
and the movie wasn't banned =/
