In response to threadstarter I used a Victorinox One-handed
Trekker when I was in service. The circumstances of how I came by
one is... shall we say... interesting. I lost it about 2 or 3 years
after that(it was in a bag of mine that got stolen).

Anyways I managed to get hold of another recently, much easier
now that they're officially for sale. The German Army (Bunderswehr)
uses the same knife.

Long time haven't been here...let me take a quick break from
work....

Anyone getting a fixed blade, I recommend a Falkniven F1. I
personally have this 3.5" blade and it's a damn sweet tool to have
when you are out field or camping.

With 3.5" blade, you cannot chop effectively, but you can baton.
Watch Man versus Wild every Tues on Discovery Channel and you can
see Mr. Bear Gryils batoning for firewood. He also carry a 3.5" -
5" blade. Nice, handle and not too obtrusive.

The price is around $170 (US) but Shears Technology is selling
it for over $250. Do check shipping charges and policies.
Apparantly our dear custom (or was it Sing Post) has recently
amended thier policies on 'weapon'!!!!! Toopid!

Another nice to have knife is the Ontario Rat-3 or Gerber's
LMF II. Have to order but it's a great knife. Youtube/Google it
:)

As for folders, I strongly recommend Victorinox's SAK (Swiss
Army Knife) - RescueTool! It's great to have it in your car or
office. It has glass breaker for emergency extradiction should you
or some victims are trapped in a vehicle.

You can also use it to smash other's wind screen for their cash
card! KIDDING :$

If you need a plier, Gerber is the answer. Unfortunately, i
personally dislike leatherman.

Funny that people associate knife as a weapon. Come on,
it's a tool. Anything can be a weapon. Most people are stabbed with
a kitchen knife, not a military or outdoor knife.

Knife is a tool. If you dunno how to use a tool, give you also
no use.

Folders have their function. Fixed blades have their functions.
But they cannot replace each other.

I agree. Heck I always tell people "even a calculator can be a
weapon if I use one and bash your head in" when they object to my
knives.

As for fixed and folding blades, they cannot replace each other
because a fixed blade generally has a full tang which allows it to
be used for applications a folding blade cant be used for, while a
folding blade is handy for carrying in places you can easily reach
or conceal.

Gerber.

I remember Buck knives. They're a great brand. Gerber is a good
brand too but I prefer SOG to Gerber. Another 2 brands to consider
are the Victorinox and Leatherman ones.
